"Chilkat
Gold Headdress"
Headdress done in the traditional fashion of Chilkat weaving, a
treasured and endangered art practice. Chilkat blankets and headdresses are
worn in traditional and secular ceremonies and pieces woven in the
traditional Chilkat way take many months and sometimes years to complete.
Piece features a Chilkat humanoid face, which represents humanity. Headdress
is woven from sheep and tapestry wools and the design features pure gold
wire, a hallmark of artist Anna Ehlers. Natural yellow cedar bark strips are
spun in with the wool in the traditional way to give strength to the fibers
and to ward off moths. Felt back, leather ties. 15.5 inches X 5 inches.
$3,600.00. By Anna Ehlers. (#1060) |

"Chilkat River Robe"
Ravenstail Weaving done in black merino wool. The patterns
chosen for this robe portray the environment found in the Chilkat River in
Southeast Alaska. The top border, done in grey, white, and blue, is a
pattern called the "back-bone of the salmon." The side borders, done in
Chilkat blue, are the "hooligan dip net pattern," and the bottom border
portrays the river itself. The patterns in the central field are the
"Raven's tail" pattern done in alternating grey and white yarns. At the
center of the Raven's tail patterns are irregular pieces of abalone shell --
these depict the treasure of the Chilkat, the salmon. The top is trimmed
with sea otter fur from Yakutat, Alaska. The bottom fringes are trimmed with
silver cones and teal green glass beads that make a lovely water-like sound
in movement. Black leather ties. 42 inches X 73 inches. This Chilkat
River Robe is not for sale but is posted to give viewers a glimpse of
the caliber of work by weaver Lani Hotch, who is available for commissioned
pieces similar to the robe through AlaskaNativeArtists.com.
