Walter
Bennett is an Eagle-Bear from the Bear House in Angoon.
Walter is a Tlingit carver who first learned the craft in
1967. He also teaches carving to apprentices and to students in the Juneau
School District.
His work is esteemed by Alaska Native collectors of Native
art; Sealaska Corp. purchased an elaborate bentwood box made by Walter and
put the work on permanent display in the corporation's headquarters in
Juneau.
Walter works primarily with yellow and red cedar. His
spectrum of work includes wood plaques, bentwood boxes, paddles, coffee
tables, halibut hooks, desktop name plates, rattles and carved drum
strikers.
He makes his home in Juneau.
