Rudolph M. Isturis belongs to the Raven Moiety, of the Dog salmon Clan, and
belongs to the Dipper House. A lifelong resident of Southeast Alaska, He was
born to Marlee and Rudolph G. Isturis. Rudolph was artistically inspired
when younger by his grandmother, Bessie Visaya, one of the original founders
of the Alaska Native Sisterhood.
Rudolph started wood
carving when in high school; while in college, he took a Tlingit
carving/design class taught by Nathan Jackson and has been instructed in
basic jewelry design. Currently he enjoys conferring with accomplished
artists such as Mick and Rick Beasley, who help prompt him to enroll in
applicable jewelry/art classes and continue to be a wonderful source of
mentorship and friendship.
The artist's creations vary
from Native-themed silver/gold fine jewelry to lapidary products that
utilize gem rocks from Southeast Alaska. Marble, fossil, and varied colorful
rocks from Prince of Wales Island tend to be what is most utilized within
his creations. Often you may find inlays that incorporate ivory, shells,
bone, and fine gems to generate a piece unique and unusual.
If you dare the artist to
create a free form designed commission, with your own inspirational
suggestions, he shall accept and enjoy the challenge of creating the gift
which will be regarded not only as beautiful, but may serve as a family
heirloom. The artist regards input from clients as one of the most
significant elements to creating a product not only appealing to the eye,
but also to the spirit and heart.
