"Unga Island Necklace
On the eastern end of the Aleutian Archipelago, windswept Unga Island is swaddled in soft grass.  It is the beloved, ancient homeland of the Unanagan people, and is now abandoned due to Russian, Japanese and American actions against the Unanagan People. Honoring the artist's home, the “Unga Island Necklace” is strung upon 41 strands of stainless steel wire. As a single strand, the piece is dramatic with Unga Island, herself, suspended precariously and perilously between the Bering Sea to the north and the north Pacific Ocean to the south. The focal piece, an island of aventurine, is placed asymmetrically upon the strand, as if caught between storms and tides. Smoldering deep arctic-blue aurora borealis 4 mm faceted glass with miniature glass heishi depicts the Bering Sea. The Island is a bold and rustic stone, one inch long.  The aventurine is protected at each end by copper beads; long the metal always protecting Unga Island and her people. Discs of mother of pearl separated with glass represent the north Pacific Ocean. The magnetic clasp is easily operated; ergonomically considerate of less than nimble fingers. 19 inches.
