George Gardner is
an Alaska Native, born and raised in southeast Alaska. He is a wood carver
that designs and creates signature paddles, plaques and wall pieces of the
Tlingit and Haida Tribes. George was taught to carve by his father and has
been carving for over 20 years.Mr. Gardner is the
son of George Gardner of Craig, Alaska, and the Late Geraldine Gardner.
George is Tlingit and Haida Indian; he is Yéil Moiety, Duk'tool, Wéix' and
comes from the Taakwaaneidi Hi't (Raven/Skulpin house) from the village of
Sxwaan of the Hinyaa Kwaan (Klawock) people. He is Chankweidi Yadi the Child
of the Haida people on his father's side.
The Raven (Yeith) design is in honor of the trickster as
it is Raven that brought us sun, moon and the stars to us. The Eagle is our
honored half. His strength and commitment to our lands and people is
experienced every day.
In Tlingit and Haida culture, a tribe is balance when it
is represented by each Moeity; Raven and Eagle. Each piece of work carries
the spirit and strength of the Eagle and Raven with it. That is why we never
make an artwork without the eyes. The eyes are the gateway to the soul,
without them, the spirit is soulless. Each beautiful creation is a signed by
the artist.
Gunalchéesh, Hááwa (Thank you) all for your support of
